Naming your quilt

How on earth do people come up with great quilt names? I'm stuck on naming one right now. Not like I label it anyway (gasp!) Really, if I had it my way, it would be "the red blue and yellow quilt". Or " the one with the grey stripes quilt" But no. I need to keep up.....and be creative. How do you name your quilt? Do you name it because of the colours, or the pattern, the emotion evoked? Is this when weed is useful? ;-)

  1. Ha ha, you're funny! Sometimes my names make it to a actual label, more often they're in my head. I always mark my quilts with my initials, location and year, even if it's just with a Micron pen.

I get mine most often from the pattern or something about the intended recipient if it's a specific gift. Some are easy and some are harder. Why don't you post a pic and ask for suggestions? Bet you get some good ones! Without any other clues the best my addled brain wil give me is "Seuss Zoot Suit" - which is too hard to say!

  2. I usually just refer to them as "this one" but I did name a recent one! I added on to the pattern name and that was it. I was kindof inventing a story about the life of this quilt and it worked out that way. Sometimes I have no clue how people name their quilts and think it might just be an idea or a name that only makes sense to them...Who knows?

  3. Nope...don't name them therefore I am of no hope whatsoever on this post and am slightly wondering why I even bothered to dive in with a comment in the first place ;-)

  4. I get other people to name mine since I am also name challenged. Then I give the person who came up with the name for the quilt credit on my label.

It save me the pressure of coming up with a name (Im a name dunce )

  6. Most of my quilts have a story and the name often comes from that. or, my husband looks at them and comes up with winners like Footballs of Destiny. Sigh...

  7. Ahahahahahaha! Luckily, I was a child who dreamed of becoming a crayon-namer so I have plenty-o-skills in that department but sometimes it's the pattern, sometimes the colour, and if I'm using someone else's design, or a particular fabric line, then I'll riff off that. I don't name all of them. I understand that when producing a pattern for the Bakeshop, you need a name.

Next time, try picking a random adjective and throwing it in front of a first name you've always liked. Say, Dancing Anna, or go with a name and a noun, like Mildred's Buttons. Can't go wrong. :-)

  8. Mime seem to get names like mammoth or madness....usually evoked by what they are or what feeling they invoke. I am horrible at naming them!
